JUDE part 1 verses 1-10 (Chosen and Apostasy)
Below is the lesson we covered in Jude vs. 1-10….THIS
LITTLE BOOK IS PACKED FULL OF THEOLOGY! We focused
on “chosen/called” and “apostates/false teachers” (as you
know, we break down the chapter verse by verse …and hopefully your children are
learning how the study the bible and learn truth for themselves).
Attached are the story boards that your children drew to give us a visual of
the verses we covered. (Photos attached).
Today we spent additional time discussing
“chosen/called”. We had a large group of plastic people on the table and
the kids each chose one of the plastic people from the group. We
read a few verses that relate to being “chosen” before the foundation of the
world.
‘Chosen by God for the privilege of
knowing him through his Son, Jesus Christ. This is not new. It has always been
God’s pattern to choose sovereignly. Nehemiah 9:7 tells us, “God chose Abram.”
Genesis 21:12 tells us, “God chose Isaac.” Romans 9:8-15 says, “God chose
Jacob.” The prophet Haggai in 2:23 says, “God chose Zerubbabel.” Isaiah 42:1
and 1 Peter 2:6 says, “God chose Christ.” Excerpt from Chosen by God, part 3
sermon at http://www.gty.org
Ø
Ephesians 1:4 For
He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in
His sight
Ø
Romans 8:29 For
those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son,
that He might be the Firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
Ø
2 Thes.
2:13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved
by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the
sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.
Ø
1 Peter 1:20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. (referring to
Christ)
Ø
John
6:44 No one can come to ME unless the FATHER who sent ME draws
him……..(Jesus speaking)
Ø
Amos 3:2 You
only have I chosen (God speaking to Israel)
How do we
know we’re chosen/called? We “produce fruit in keeping with
repentance” Matthew 3:8
Also…..
in 1 Thessalonians 1 Paul writes along with his companions Silas, or
Silvanus and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians. He gives thanks to God
always for them, verse 2. Verse 3, he bears in mind their “work of faith, labor
of love, steadfastness of hope.” And then he says in verse 4 - notice this -
that he “knows, brethren, beloved by God, his choice of you.” “I know you’re
elect,” he says. “I know you’re chosen.” How do you know that? “Because our
gospel didn’t come to you in word only, but in power, in the Holy Spirit and
with full conviction.” Then in verse 6. “And you also became imitators of us
and of the Lord.” And verse 7. “You became examples to all the believers.” And
verse 9. “You turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God and to wait
for his Son from heaven.”
We also spent time talking about those who are not called
…..and that Jude is writing about people in the church who are “false
believers / apostates” who have “crept in unnoticed” …..and the
characteristics of the people. On the outside they look and act like true
believers….but if you spend personal time with them, you will see their “true
fruit/actions” that are not in line with scripture and the holy life of
obedience that believers strive to live. We shared an example of some
friends who attended a Baptist Church in Jenks and when they began spending
social time with the friends in their Sunday School class – they realized that
these people were not living lives away from Church that honored Christ….. they
were surprised and shocked that “professing believers” would act in that
manner.
As Pastor Eric read this
morning in Luke 11:28…..”Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe
it”….(practice it - Titus 1:1 “…Knowledge of the truth is according to
Godliness…”).

In Hebrew, Jude = Judah … and in Greek, Jude = Judas
Who is Jude in vs. 1? Bondservant and Brother
of James
Read Matt. 13:55 and Mark 6:3 We learn that he’s also the brother
of _____________
What is a bondservant?
The
term "bondservant" in the New Testament (bond-servant or slave in
some translations) is a translation of the Greek word doulos. Some historians
estimate that in the first century as many as one-third of the Roman population
lived as bondservants. The New Testament also notes that Jews owned
bondservants or slaves.
What does it mean to be called?
2 Tim 1: 8-9
2 Thes 2:13-14
1 Peter 2:9
Romans 8:28-30
Are you called? Chosen?
1 John 3: 1-3 and vs. 6
How do we respond?
Ephesians 5: 1-3 immorality, impurity, greed must not
be what?
Who is Jude
writing to?
“Professing” Christians in the Church
Jude's letter begins and ends with very comforting words to Christians.
In verse 1 it describes us as "those who are called, loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ." All three verbs are passive. They
stress the action of God. God calls, God loves, and God keeps. We are called, are loved, and are kept. Jude is very eager
to begin by stressing the security of the believer in God's electing and
preserving love. ….. Desiring God, message by John Piper
What must
they contend for?
The Faith
The powerful
expression contend earnestly translates a present infinitive
(epagonizomai)
and stresses the need to defend the truth continually and vigorously (cf. 1 Tim. 1:18; 6:12; 2 Tim. 4:7). It is
a compound verb from which the English agonize is transliterated. From Jude’s day
until now, true believers have always had to battle for the purity of the
salvation gospel.
What does contend mean? to argue or state (something) in a strong and definite way
What does faith mean? = hope assurance
belief. Truth. Stability. Fidelity.
Who is in the "hall of faith” in Hebrews 1-11 and
17-31?
How does
someone creep in unnoticed? They act and look the same as you do
Some have crept in unnoticed? Who would that
be? He’s talking about
someone who’s heard the gospel, knows what truth is, but rejects the truth by
not living a “holy life” and not “bearing fruit”
Jude describes 2 types of people…. One in vs 4 and
one in vs. 1 ….. Who are the 2 types of people?
Vs. 1 Those who are the called, beloved,
kept and in vs. 4 those who are marked out for condemnation
What does licentiousness mean? One who
acknowledges no restraint; desire for pleasure; whatever is disgraceful
The Revel
Bible Dictionary defines "lasciviousness" as
"wanton, licentious.... It means unrestrained greed, or an
"animal-like" indulgence in any passionate desire.
Who do they deny in vs 4? Jesus as
Master and Lord
Where are these unglodly people in vs 4? In the
Church!
Character is the constant
theme regarding false teachers—their personal corruption. While their teaching
is clever, subtle, deceptive, enticing, and delivered in myriads of forms, the
common way to recognize them is to look behind their false spiritual fronts and
see their wicked lives (2 Pet. 2:10, 12, 18–19).
What happened to the people in the desert who did not
believe? Vs. 5 They were destroyed
Jude 5 saved . .. destroyed. Cf. Heb. 3:16–19. God miraculously delivered the nation
of Israel out of Egyptian bondage (Ex. 12:51; Deut. 4:34), only to have them respond in
unbelief, doubting, and defecting from faith in God that he could bring them
into the Promised Land (Num. 13:25–14:4), even to the extent of
worshiping an idol of their own making, & murmuring against God instead of
adoring him (Ex. 16:7–12; 1 Cor. 10:10–11).
What happened to the angels who didn’t keep their domain?
Vs. 6 They are in bonds, in utter darkness
What happened to people from the Sodom and Gomorrah area?
In punishment of eternal fire
What did the people in vs. 8 do? they falsely claimed
that they had visions/dreams from God …they were apostates
Who is Michael the archangel ? He’s an archangel who
disputes against and rebukes the devil. (Does not bring judgement against
the devil).
Dan 10:13, 21 & Dan 12:1 - a prince who helps with
battles
Rev. 12:7 a warrior who battles against the dragon

Apostates
- False teachers and false believers will be destroyed
REGARDING
APOSTATES: We didn’t share this
with the kids …..but we always stress that if it’s not in the bible and an
activity that is not demonstrated in the bible ….. then we need to “examine it”
and probably not put it into practice.
A timely example of false teaching and those who creep in
unnoticed. I
was shocked when I read this email notice from my child’s school: “This year we are pleased to bring Dr. Jerry
Root, Associate Professor of Christian Formation, Evangelism and
Leadership at Wheaton College.”
I’m thankful that he won’t be speaking on “spiritual
formation” – but if people buy his books and start reading his articles, they
could easily be led astray. Spiritual formation was a big deal a few years
ago….and we don’t hear as much about it today and hopefully it’s because people
have steered away from these eastern mystical practices and recognized it as
FALSE TEACHING. We included at the end of the email info what some of the
discernment ministries wrote about this “formation practice”. Some people
may not be aware of this.

May you all have a blessed week
and have the courage to share the good news!
We live in a time where many people don’t know God’s Word
and are unable to discern truth from error. We are without
excuse when it comes to discernment and we are called to “examine/test” things.
A timely example of false teaching and those who “creep in
unnoticed”: We were shocked after reading this email
announcement about a speaker who will be at our child’s school: “This
year we are pleased to bring Dr. Jerry Root, Associate Professor of
Christian Formation, Evangelism and Leadership at Wheaton College.”
Thankful that his topic is not “spiritual formation” – but…. if people buy his
books and start reading his articles, they could easily be led astray if they
don’t know God’s Word. Spiritual formation was a big deal a few years
ago….we don’t hear as much about it today and hopefully it’s because people
have steered away from these eastern mystical practices and recognized it as
FALSE TEACHING. Below are excerpts of articles from discernment
ministries about this “formation practice” :
….”many of the leading
voices in the spiritual formation movement stress the need for more intuitive
interpretations of spirituality. They encourage believers to incorporate a wide
variety of extrabiblical spiritual practices, such as contemplative prayer,
silence, meditation, creative expression, and yoga. In fact, some of the most
popular methods of spiritual formation have been lifted from Catholicism, new
age mysticism, or other religions and rebranded with biblical-sounding
terminology. But any kind of subjective spirituality that draws your
focus away from the Lord and His truth can have disastrous results, derailing
your spiritual growth and cutting you off from God’s plan for your
sanctification. All true spiritual growth starts with the preeminent role
of God’s Word in the lives of His people” Dr. MacArthur in post on
Spiritual Formation http://www.gty.org/blog/B120910/what-is-spiritual-formation-and-why-does-it-matter?Term=spiritual%20formation
“But the fact is these are not new ideas at all but ancient ones that go
back to the early days of the church. In fact, it is the historic
roots of these practices that are touted as reasons the church should embrace
these methods today. The idea is that since these procedures and forms have
deep roots in church history and because they were supposedly invented by
“spiritual masters,” we would be wise to incorporate them into our public and
private worship today. It should be observed, as we examine some of
these liturgies and methods, that most of them have no basis in
Scripture. They have been invented by men and accepted by certain
church hierarchies but they are not biblically-based. As a result,
at the very least none of these practices should be seen as mandatory for
spiritual growth or church life. Let’s overview some of the things
spiritual formation is incorporating into its system for worship. The
“face” of the Spiritual Formation Movement, as well as contemplative
spirituality and emergent Christianity, is often first noticed within
evangelical churches by the incorporation of traditional Roman Catholic and
Eastern Orthodox practices and liturgies. Many of these practices are
being introduced at special events and eventually find their way into the
regular services of the church. Worshippers are often confused by what
they are experiencing and do not understand what is taking place. It
should be understood that when traditions borrowed from errant groups such as
Catholics and Orthodoxy are taken into evangelical worship and life, and are
done so without a careful examination of Scripture, what is being adopted is
more than just methods. There is a comprehensive, and in many ways
wrong, theology upon which these practices rest. Methods do matter,
and we are naïve to think that we can take techniques from false religions and
not eventually embrace their theology”. Dr. Gary Gilley, pastor of Southern
View Chapel
“Spiritual formation is the process of apparent spiritual development
through engaging in a set of behaviors, termed disciplines.
Advocates believe these disciplines help shape the character of the
practitioner into the likeness of Christ.
Despite assertions that the spiritual disciplines are “God-ordained,”13 they are in fact derived from the
practices of Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox mystics.14 These practices are contrary to
the biblical theology fought for in the Reformation.
Spiritual disciplines are not commanded in Scripture. To impose
practices not commanded in Scripture as necessary for spiritual maturity is to
undermine and deny the sufficiency of Scripture (2 Tim. 3:16–17).
The Apostle Paul writes against such ascetic practices. In Col. 2:20–23, Paul rebukes the idea of relying on fleshly practices to
grow in holiness. Gal. 3:3 reads: “Are you so foolish? Having
begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected in the flesh?”
Deception is rampant, and unbiblical, mystical practices may offer
people an actual spiritual experience, though not one that originates from the
true and living God. To ignore the boundaries of Scripture is to open oneself
up to danger.” CRN, Christian
Research Network http://christianresearchnetwork.org/topic/spiritual-formation/
A large
number of evangelicals are involved in spiritual formation (SF) which are
“disciplines” that those who wish to experience spiritual growth must practice.
Where do the disciplines come from? Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox
mystics, which should be a big red flag right there. In this piece
Pamela Couvrette tells of how she was led into SF by “mature believers.”
But before long she came to know the truth — she had been led into false
teaching by people she trusted. posted by Marsha West on September 8, 2015 in Discernment 1 from Berean
