Matthew 27: 1-31
The Jewish leaders had a trial for Jesus during the
night. …..review of Matthew 26.
Who did they take Jesus to at daybreak? Pilate
What role was Pilate? The governor
Pilate lived in Caesarea on the Mediterranean Coast, but he
was in Jerusalem for the Passover celebrations.
What did Judas feel when he realized that Jesus had been
condemned? He felt remorse (some
versions read “he repented”)
Metaméllomai
= regret, remorse for action, very sorry
Metanoeó = to change one’s mind or purpose – repent,
repented, repents
The distinctions so often laid down between these words, to
the effect that the former expresses a merely emotional change the latter a
change of choice, the former has reference to particulars the latter to the
entire life, the former signifies nothing but regret even though amounting to
remorse, the latter that reversal of moral purpose known as repentance — seem
hardly to be sustained by usage.
Read: 2 Corinthians 7: 10
What does godly grief produce? Repentance that leads to salvation
What does worldly grief produce? death
What did he return? The 30 pieces of silver to the chief
priests
What did Judas say to them? I have sinned by betraying
innocent blood
Jewish law was to condemn a false accuser with the same
punishment.
How did the priests respond? What is that to us? See to
that yourself!
After he threw the silver pieces into the temple sanctuary,
what did he do? he went away and hanged himself.
What did the priests do with the silver? They bought a
Potter’s Field as a
burial place for strangers
Jesus before Pilate
After hearing the accusations what did Pilate ask Jesus? Are you the king of the Jews?
After hearing the accusations what did Pilate ask Jesus? Are you the king of the Jews?
What did Jesus reply? You have said so
What was the custom during the festival? For the
governor to release a prisoner
Who were the 2 choices for release that Pilate gave the
people? Jesus or Barabbas
Who did they choose to release? Barabbas
When he asked what they wanted him to do to Jesus the people
said what? Crucify Him
What did Pilate say when he washed his hands in front of the
crowd? I am innocent of this Man’s blood.
They people said what? His blood shall be on us and on
our children!
Do you think that Jews have suffered persecution since the
death of Christ?
What happens to the Jews in Jerusalem in 70 AD?
The Roman legions surrounded the city and began to slowly squeeze
the life out of the Jewish stronghold. By the year 70, the attackers had
breached Jerusalem's outer walls and began a systematic ransacking of the city.
The assault culminated in the burning and destruction of the Temple that served
as the center of Judaism.
In victory, the Romans slaughtered thousands. Of those sparred
from death: thousands more were enslaved and sent to toil in the mines of
Egypt, others were dispersed to arenas throughout the Empire to be butchered
for the amusement of the public. The Temple's sacred relics were taken to Rome
where they were displayed in celebration of the victory.
The soldiers took Jesus away
What did they put on Jesus after they stripped Him? A
Scarlet Robe
What did they put on Jesus’s head? A crown of thorns
What did they say to “mock Jesus”? Hail, King of the
Jews!
Matt. 27:26 scourged. The whip used for
scourging consisted of several strands of leather attached to a wooden handle.
Each strand had a bit of metal or bone attached to the end. The victim was
bound to a post by the wrists, high over his head, so that the flesh of the
back would be taut. An expert at wielding the scourge could literally tear the
flesh from the back, lacerating muscles, and sometimes even exposing the
kidneys or other internal organs. Scourging alone was fatal in some cases.
Jesus was accused of calling Himself a “King” which was
considered treason against Caesar. This was a crime punishable by
death.
