In New Testament times, Tyre was the main seaport of the Roman
province of Syria and Phoenicia – a prosperous city with pagan temples
and twin harbours built on either side of a small island. The Roman settlement,
to the south of the island, was constructed adjacent to the causeway linking it
to the mainland, built by Alexander the Great during his seige in 332BC. Tyre became part of the Roman Empire in 64BC
and was one of the first Roman cities in the region to embrace Christianity.

What does Jesus mean by the term “leaven” in vs. 6? …Read vs. 12…. He was referring to the teaching of the
Pharisees and Sadducees.
What is leaven? Yeast
So the disciples thought Jesus was talking about the Yeast
in the bread. What does Yeast do to
bread? Makes it rise.
Do it make the whole loaf rise or just parts of it?
So Jesus compares leaven to “bad teaching” …”false
teaching” Because it spreads quickly
among people who have sin in them….and don’t have the Holy Spirit guiding them
in all wisdom and discernment that helps believers recognize false teaching.
Jesus then asks who
people are saying He is….. What is Peters’ response in vs. 16? You are the Christ, the Son of the Living
God.
Who revealed this to Peter?
Vs. 17 My Father who is in
heaven.
What does Jesus mean by “rock” in vs. 18? The foundation HE will build the
church.
What is that “foundation” today? The Word of God and a
total submission of obedience to The Lord.
Read Matthew 16:
21-28
What does Jesus remind them about in vs. 21? His Death and
Resurrection
Why does Jesus compare Peter to Satan in vs. 23? Because Peter didn’t want Christ to die.
In vs. 24 what must we do to “come after Jesus”? Deny himself, take
up his cross and follow me.
What does take up his cross mean? It was a death march to your own
execution.
So what must we put to death? Our selfish desires And focus on what? Faith, trust and submitting to Christ
What do we gain if seek after the things of this world? See
vs. 26 man forfeits (or loses) his
soul ….to where? Hell
What will happen when the Son of Man comes in the glory of
His Father with His angels? Vs. 27
