Matthew 17
Read vs. 1 -13
What does transfigured mean?  Greek “metamorphoo” = change, transform (Jesus was changed physically)
In vs. 3 Who appeared with Jesus?  Moses and Elijah
            What would Moses represent… what did he bring the people in the OT?   The Law
            What would Elijah represent- what was his job in the OT?  The Prophets / Messengers from God
Why did Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus? They were talking with HIM
            What were they talking about?  READ Luke 9 vs. 30-31 – They spoke of HIS departure
In vs. 4 Why would Peter mention making 3 tents/tabernacles?  READ Lev. 23:42-43  Reference to the Feast of Booths/Tents/Tabernacles.  You shall dwell in booths for SEVEN days.
So Peter was trying to place Moses and Elijah on the same level as Christ.
In vs. 5 What does the voice out of the cloud say?  This is My beloved SON in who I’m well pleased
Who’s voice is this?  God’s
READ Matt. 3:17  What was spoken?  This is My beloved SON in who I’m well pleased
What was taking place? The baptism of Christ
We see 2 bookends:  The introduction to/beginning of Christ’s Ministry and moving toward the end of Christ’s Ministry
In vs. 6 How did the disciples respond?  They fell on their faces.  A common response to the realization that the Holy God of the universe is present.             
            Read:  Isa. 6:vs. 1 & 5             & Ezek. 1:28    & Rev. 1:17
In vs. 12 Jesus explains that Elijah already came…. Who would that have been? 
Read vs. 13 …..John the Baptist  who was a “type” of  Elijah who came as a messenger.
In vs. 12 What does Jesus mention again?  That HE is going to suffer at their (meaning the unbelievers) hands.
Read vs. 14- 23
In vs. 15 What could the disciples not do?  Cure the son and cast out the demon
What had the disciples done earlier?  Read Matt. 10:5-8  Healed the sick, Raised the dead, Cleansed lepers and Cast out demons.
This is one year later since Chapter 10……Why couldn’t they perform miracles in this situation?  Read vs. 20  because of their lack of faith  
Who was their faith in?  Themselves and their own abilities
READ 1 John 5:14  When we ask for anything according to HIS will, HE hears us. 
Sometimes we may want something to happen, but if it’s not according to HIS Will – it can’t happen.  This is why we “ask/request/pray” and then we “trust” God to respond according to HIS Will….not ours.
What does Jesus remind them of again in vs. 22-23?  HIS death and resurrection
How did the disciples respond?  They were deeply grieved
Read Matthew 17 vs. 24-27
The two-drachma tax (equivalent to about two days’ wages) was collected annually from every male over 20 for the upkeep of the temple. 
What was the miracle Jesus performed?  He put a shekel in the mouth of a fish.
Read:  Rom. 13:1-2  Who put authorities in place?  God
            Titus 3:1  Who are we to be submissive to?  Rulers and Authorities
             2 Peter 2: 13-14  Who are we to be subject to?  Every human institution
