Matthew 18
Read vs. 1-14
What does Jesus say are the 2 things that must happen in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven?
                Converted and become like children
What does He mean by “like children”?  someone who is humble
Like the beatitudes we studied in Matthew 5 …. Faith is pictured as simple, helpless, trusting dependence of those who have no resources of their own.  No achievements and no accomplishments to offer.
In vs. 6 who are “these little children ” o r “little ones”?  True believers
We have studied the word “WOE” in the past ….. what does WOE mean?  This is serious, typically to those who are headed down the broad road to destruction.
Iv vs. 7 Who is given the “WOE” warning?  The people of the world, because of their stumbling blocks
How serious are stumbling blocks to Jesus?
                Read Romans 14:13 & 1 Cor. 8:13
So even as believers, we are not to cause a brother or fellow believer to stumble – nor ourselves to stumble!
So this means to not put ourselves in situations where we might “stumble” or “sin”.
In vs. 8 & 9 what are the 3 external things we sin with:   our eyes, hands and feet.
Give examples of things that might make us stumble like:  eyes_____________________________________,
Hand___________________________________________, foot________________________________________.
When dealing with others, what is another external thing that we sin with?  Our mouth
In vs. 12, Who are the “sheep”?  True believers
What will Christ “the shepherd” do if one out of 100 goes astray?  He will go and find the sheep or true believer.
So The Father does not Will that any of these “little ones” or True Believers does what?   Perish  (the word in this context refers to spiritual devastation and not eternal destruction).
Read Matthew 18:15-20
If we see a fellow believer in sin, what should we do?  go and show him his fault in private
If he doesn’t listen, then what should we do?  take 2 or 3 other believers with you to show him his fault.
If he doesn’t listen, then what should we do?  tell it to the Church (so the Church can exercise discipline – which typically today is a letter to the person telling them that they cannot be a part of the Church until they repent and turn away from the sin).
Why should this process take place?  So the believer who is in sin will repent and be reconciled to God and the church
Vs 18 What does bound and loose mean?  He’s still talking about Church discipline.   When the Church says the unrepentant person is bound in sin, the church is saying what God says about that person (based on what’s written in the bible).  When the Church acknowledges that a repentant person has been loosed from that sin, God agrees.
Vs. 19-20 In what context is Matthew referencing 2 or 3 people being gathered ….for what?  Church discipline to bring back a true believer who is committing some type of ongoing or continual sin.
Vs. 20 is not referring to “prayer” …as true believers with discernment, we must keep all scripture verses IN CONTEXT!!
Read vs. 21-35   willingness to forgive others
In vs. 22 How many times does Jesus tell Peter he must forgive?  Seventy-times seven.
What is the parable about?  A slave owed a great debt to the King and when he begged for mercy, the King forgave him.
What does the slave then do to another slave who owed him money? He refuses to forgive him and throws him into prison.
How does the King respond when he hears about the slave he had forgiven?  He had the slave tortured.
Have you ever gotten upset with someone for hurting your feelings and then tried to hurt them back?
When we sin ….who do we sin against?  God
Who do we go to when we ask for forgiveness?  God
So we should always forgive who?  Brothers in Christ
Who do we owe a debt to?  God
What is our debt?  Sin
How is our sin debt paid?  By Christ’s blood
Who does Christ’s blood impact?  those who repent and recognize they are a sinner in need of a Savior….like a humble child
According to this parable …..What happens if we don’t forgive?  Then we will be tortured.
If you hold a grudge against someone ….who is in more turmoil?  The other person ….or you ?
