Below is the Lesson from Matthew 1:18-25
The format is dissecting the scripture verse by verse so the children can easily understand. We look at key repeated words, we ask the 5W's and H, we sometimes look at Greek or Hebrew word meaning, we reference how Scripture Interprets Scripture and often look up passages that point to one another.
The kids draw a storyboard sequence that reviews the verses we covered for each lesson. (We typically draw about 10-11 storyboards). Our class size ranges from 11-18 kids. It takes an hour to complete the lesson.
Regarding preparation:
We follow the curriculum passages, but the kids want to go a little deeper …..so we do a lot of research to prepare for the lessons. Some of the sources we use are:
Matthew Henry Commentary – written a few hundred years ago
Strongs Concordance – Hebrew/Greek Translation
John MacArthur Study Bible – this is now a phone app (yeah!)
SLJ Library of Sermons
Treasury of Scripture Knowledge – concordance written in the early 1800’s
Bible Hub online
Blue Letter Bible online
And….lots of sermons from many solid expository bible teachers
This note is sent to parents after Church, so they can expand on the conversation of what their child learned.
This
week (Sunday 12/6/2015) we looked at the 2 genealogies of Christ. Matt. 1 (possibly
Joseph’s lineage) and Luke 3 (possibly Mary’s lineage) ….both lines
split at David. One follows Solomon’s line the other follows Nathan’s
line. We looked for names we recognized: Adam, Seth, Enoch, Noah,
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah (4th son of Jacob), Boaz (Ruth’s
husband), David….plus more that are not as well-known.
We
read Matt. 1:18-25
(drew 2 picture boxes – storyboards…. #1 angel/Joseph
#2 Joseph/Mary holding hands
Compared Matt. 1:21 ….”save people from sin” to Luke
19:10 …. “seek and save …lost”
Asked What are we saved from?
Read: Rom. 3:23 ….”all sin”
Rom. 6:17…. “slaves to sin”
Rom. 6:23….”wages of sin is death”
Rom 14:10…”all stand for judgement”
Rom. 14:12…”each will give an account”
o
We discussed that we each have a body and a soul. The soul will
live eternally in one of two places.
o
We discussed self-examination of our walk with Christ…..not compared to
other people, but to Christ. We discussed that they need to decide now as
5th/6th graders how they will respond to temptation when
they are a teenager, when they are driving, when they move out of their house
…. Decisions to submit to Christ start now!
o The kids listed the following as
signs of true belief:
Hunger for God’s word (read
daily)… Selflessness…
Obedience…
Prayer…
Righteousness
o
We reminded them that good deeds done on our own without Christ are
considered “filthy rags” – so our righteous deeds must be done in serving
Christ His way…not ours.
We
read Luke 2:1-20 The kids know the Christmas story….so we expanded on some things that
they may not have thought about
Discussed purpose of Census: military service and taxes
Both Joseph and Mary were descendants of David, so had to register in
Bethlehem….they traveled about 70 miles
Micah 5:2 prophecy of Christ’s birth
Picture boxes/storyboards #1 Census
#2 J & M traveling on donkey
#3 Stable/baby/manger
#4 shepherds/field/angels
#5 all in the stable
Look deeper at Luke 2:14 “peace among men”
What does Peace mean?
Read Rom. 5:1 ….”peace with God”
Acts 10:36….”peace thru Christ”
Eph. 2:1…. “dead in trespasses and sin”
“Enemies of God” ….. Rom. 8:6-7; Col. 1:21; Rom. 5:10
2 Cor. 7:10 “worldly sorrow” or “Godly sorrow” over our sin …… what are the
results of each? Death or salvation
2 Cor. 5:17-20 ….”new creature”…..”be reconciled to God” ….
The
kids read each of these other verses that point to/mirror a specific
topic. They need to know their books of the bible in order to find these
verses quickly!
Whew….lots
of stuff….great discussion and great questions and responses from your kiddos! WE put out some heavy
things for them to think about this week!
We pray that the Lord is giving your child a passion and
desire to know Him, walk with Him and seek truth in His Word.
Feel free to visit with Mike or myself if you have any
questions.
May you have a blessed week of serving Christ!
Best regards,
Mike & Kim
