Matthew 11

Jesus sent the disciples out to preach that Kingdom of Heaven is at hand….and to heal, raise dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons….in the area of Galilee.

Johns hears of these works and sent question to Jesus:  “Are you the Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?”   

Why does he ask this? (read Matt. 3:12) _________________________________________________

What is Jesus’s response in vs. 6-7: 

                Blind receive ______________________

                Lame ____________________________

                Lepers are ________________________

                Deaf ____________________________

                Dead are _________________________

                The Poor have ________________________________________________________________

What was the Gospel they were preaching?  (Matthew 3:2, 4:17, 10:7) __________________________

Basis of the Gospel:  Recognizing SIN, Need for RIGHTEOUSNESS, Coming  JUDGEMENT = We need of a Savior (Christ)

In Matt. 11:10 Jesus refers to John the Baptist as a messenger (read also  Malachi 3:1)

In Matt.11:14 Why does Jesus say John is Elijah? (read Malachi 4:5 & Matt. 11:9)_____________________________

How did the people respond in verse 20 to the message being preached?  __________________________________

In vs. 21….what does HE mean by “WOE”??___________________________________________________________

In vs. 25 Who are the “wise” __________________________  Who are the “infants” __________________________

                Read 1 Corinthians  1:27  Who are the 2 groups of people?  __________________ & ______________________

                ….”Foolish things to shame the wise”…….weak to shame the strong

Vs. 27  Who chooses to reveal Christ to us? ___________________________  Can we do this on our own? __________

So salvation is the sovereign work of God!

Vs. 28 “Come to Me” is a call to what?  ____________________

Who are weary and heavy laden? (read Matt. 5:3)   “Poor in _________________” which means they are spiritually bankrupt….they have nothing spiritually to give……they are not at peace, they are restless, sinners in need of a Savior

What does Jesus mean by “give you rest”?   read Hebrews 4:1-3 “for we who have BELIEVED enter that rest”….

REST in Greek – “Anapano” = Repose  ……. This is a rest from the fruitless effort to be saved by the law.

So if we “come to Him” …..we will find what?   _____________________________________________

In vs. 29 & 30 what is His Yoke? ________________________________________________________________

Farmers used to yoke the young ox with the old experienced ox to train them.  The old ox will take the major load and the young one will be walking along and learning from him.  In scripture, Jesus is helping those who are tired and burdened from carrying the load by themselves ……  by going through all the steps to follow the law – which is only a covering for their sin ….and cannot fully forgive them.  

Only Salvation by Faith in Christ will forgive them and lighten their burden!
