Matthew 20
Read vs. 1-16 (purple
bold words are answers to the fill in blank questions that your child
completed)
What does Jesus compare the landowner and laborers to?
Our Father in Heaven and true believers
A denarius was a typical days wage at that time. It
was the normal process for laborers to wait in town during harvest time hoping
to be hired for the day’s work which began at 6am and ended at 6pm.
If the work day began at 6 am….what time would have been the
3rd hour? 9am
What time would have been the 11th hour? 5pm
How long did the 11th hour laborers work? 1 hour
How much money did they get paid compared to the others who
had worked all day? The same amount
Was this fair that the 1 hour laborers were paid the same as
the 12 hour laborers?
What does Jesus say in verse 16? The last shall be
first and the first last.
What does this mean? That everyone who enters the
Kingdom of Heaven is equal.
Read Romans 9:15
What does Jesus say about mercy? I will have mercy on whom I
have mercy
Read Luke 23:41-43 What does Jesus tell the thief on
the cross? ……today you shall be with Me in
Paradise.
Was this man a believer before he went to the cross?
How long had he believed in Jesus?
So we can be a believer for 70 years or 5 minutes and God
will treat believers the same.
Read Matthew 20: 17-28
What is Jesus telling them about in verses 17-19?
His crucifixion and
resurrection
Are they listening to Him?
Salome is the mother of the sons of Zebedee and is the
sister of Mary the mother of Jesus. They want to play on the affection of
Jesus for His mother. And they want to use the fact that they were His cousins
and Salome is His aunt to get special privilege or honor….they want to be the
greatest.
What does Salome ask Jesus? If her sons can sit on the
right and left of
His throne in the Kingdom
What does Jesus ask them? If they are able to drink the cup He’s
about to drink
How do they respond? We are able
What is the cup He’s about to drink? Suffering and death
In vs 23 What does Jesus mean what He says: My cup
you shall drink? That they will also suffer and die for their faith
In vs. 24 Why were the other disciples
indignant? They were jealous, because they wanted to be the greatest
In vs. 26 Who does Jesus say is the greatest?
The one who is willing to be a servant
According to His statement in vs. 28 ….Why did Jesus
come? To serve and give His life as a ransom
So, the bible says…..we are born sinners and we are slaves
to sin. “A ransom is a price paid to redeem a slave or prisoner.
Redemption does not involve a price paid to Satan. Rather, the ransom is
offered to God – to satisfy His justice and wrath against sin. The price
paid was Christ’s own life – as a blood atonement.” …. Suffering the pain of
divine wrath in the p lace of sinners was the “cup” he had to drink” MacArthur Study Bible
What would the ransom pay for? Our sin debt
What’s the sin of desiring to be great? Pride
What’s the opposite of PRIDE? Humility
Micah
6:8 says “
What doe s the Lord desire of me? But to do justly, to love mercy and to
walk humbly with my God”
As believers we must lead by being servants and
sacrificing for others, as Jesus did.
·
Sometimes we make our wants and desires an idol. If things
don’t go our way….then we get upset.
·
We want to be the greatest, we want to be first, we want to win, we
desire that people treat us with respect; we want others to treat us better
than we treat them ….. We get upset if these things don’t happen!
·
We act “nice” to people when they do what we want …..or we act mean to
people when they don’t do what we want.
What are
some ways you can sacrifice your needs and wants ….and focus on other people?
How can you
serve them?
Is your
life characterized by a servant’s heart or a selfish heart? What would
your parents or those close to you say?
What will
you do this week to serve someone else ?
The Pride of the World……
excerpt of blog post from John MacArthur …. The full blog can be accessed in
the GTY Bible Study phone app.
We
live in a Christianity now that thinks God's only design for us is to be
healthy, wealthy, prosperous, happy, satisfied, fulfilled and so forth. We know
very little about sacrifice. We know very little of the pain of suffering. All
we want to do is eliminate all that so that we can get on to self-fulfillment.
We're consumed with the creature comforts, pleasure, vacations, travel, you
name it, for the self-satisfying feeling that we get by fulfilling what we
believe to be deep needs.
And
in the process, we have begun to exalt pride. We've given place to pride, to
self-fulfillment, to self-glory, to self-promotion. And we've begun to forget
the whole subject of humility. People are not interested in that. There was a
time in the church, you go back and there were many who were teaching and
preaching on humility and there was a certain brokenness in the church. You
look around the time of the Reformation, or the time of the Puritans and you
find there was a dominant sense of brokenness, of contrition. There was a
trembling at the Word of God. There was a humility, a meekness within the
church that gave it great power. But now the church wants to be proud and
fulfilled and indulgent and so forth. And it has fallen prey to flip-flopping
the sin of pride and the virtue of humility and making pride a virtue and
humility a weakness.
But
the Bible is very clear about these things. The Bible speaks about pride very
clearly. "A proud heart is sin," it says in Proverbs 21:4.
"Every one who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord," it
says in Proverbs 16:5. "And the fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride
and arrogance." In fact, pride in Romans 1:30 is the mark of man's fallenness
into a reprobate mind. In 1 Timothy 3:6, it says "Pride comes from the
devil." In 1 John 2:16, it says it is a part of the world. And in 1
Timothy 6:3 and 4 it says it belongs to false teachers. So, pride is sin. It is
an abomination. It is to be hated. It is an element of man's fallen reprobate
mind. It is generated by the devil. It is part of the world. And it belongs to
false teachers. Certainly shouldn't be a part of Christians' experience to
pursue self-glory, pride, so forth.
In
fact, the Bible says that God resists the proud, James tells us in chapter 4.
In Isaiah 23:9 it says He brings the pride...the proud into contempt. In Psalm
31:23 it says the proud will be recompensed, that is judged. In Exodus 18:11,
the proud will be subdued. Psalm 18:27, they'll be brought low. They'll be
abased, Daniel 4:37. They'll be scattered, Luke 1:51. They'll be punished,
Malachi says in chapter 4 verse 1.
But
on the other hand, humility is a virtue in the Bible and is exalted as a
virtue. And we all understand that biblically and we need to understand that in
terms of our experience as well. Micah...I love Micah 6:8...it says, "What
does the Lord desire of thee? But to do justly, to love mercy and to walk
humbly with thy God." To walk humbly with thy God. by John MacArthur

Behavior Modification
vs. Repentance
Oftentimes problems with the fruit on a tree are not because of problems
with the fruit on the tree. Below the soil’s surface, there is usually a
sickness present. Things like fungus, poor nutrient content in the soil,
insufficient watering, and pests can plague the roots and subsequently damage
the tree. So goes the root, so goes the fruit. Neglect the root, neglect the
fruit.
