Matthew 19
Read vs. 1-12
Jesus was in the area of Perea on the other side of the Jordan River.
In vs. 2 What did Jesus do for the large crowds who followed Him.  He healed them.
In vs. 3 What did the Pharisees ask Jesus about?  Divorce                                      Why?  To  test Him.
Husband and wife are of God's joining together; synezeuxen--he hath yoked them together, so the word is, and it is very significant. God himself instituted the relation between husband and wife in the state of innocence. Marriage and the Sabbath are the most ancient of divine ordinances.  Matthew Henry Commentary
Jesus responds with an Old Testament Quote:  read Gen. 2:24
What do the Husband and Wife do when they marry?  They cleave and become one….see Matt. 19:6.
Read Duet. 24:1-4   Laws that Moses established because of the requests for divorce.
Citing Genesis 2:24, Jesus shows God’s plan for marriage did not include divorce (Matt. 19:4–6). When asked then why Moses commanded divorce, Jesus corrects the Pharisees, saying he only allowed it because of sin.  http://www.ligonier.org/learn/devotionals/sanctity-marriage/
In. vs. 8 How does Jesus describe the sin that leads to divorce?  Hardness of heart.
Read vs. 13-15
Who was brought to Jesus?  Little Children
Who rebuked them?  The Disciples
What does Jesus say belongs to such as these little children?  The kingdom of Heaven
What other passage did we read about little children?  Matt. 18:1-4
God often shows a special mercy to those who because of age or mental deficiency are incapable of either faith or willful unbelief (cf. Jonah 4:11). They are called “innocent” in Jer. 19:4. This does not mean they are free from the inherited guilt and moral corruption of Adam’s sin (see notes on Rom. 5:12–19), but rather that they are not culpable in the same sense as those whose sins are premeditated and deliberate.
Read vs. 16-30
Teacher: This is not necessarily recognition of Christ’s deity. The young man simply meant that Christ was righteous and a teacher from God who apparently had eternal life and might know how he could get it.
What is the question asked in vs. 16?  What good thing shall I do that I may obtain “eternal life”?
How does Jesus respond?  With a question
Who does Jesus say is GOOD on vs. 17?  God
What does Jesus say he must do?  Keep the commandments
Is this possible?   ________________
Now he wants to negotiate – so what does he ask Jesus?  Which ones?
How many commands does Jesus list?  Six
Who can say the commands?
Are these commands dealing with Man or God?
These are five of the six commandments that make up the second table of the Ten Commandments—all dealing with human relationships  Ex. 20:12–16
In vs. 20 what does the man claim he has done?  Kept all the commandments
In vs. 21 What does Jesus tell him to do?
1.      Go and sell possessions
2.      Give to the poor
3.      Come, follow Me
Jesus was not giving general rules for salvation, but HE was exposing the man’s true heart.  His response reveals he was guilty of loving himself and his possessions more that his neighbors …..and he lacked true faith, which involves a willingness to surrender everything to Christ.
In vs. 22 how did the man respond?  Went away grieving                          Why?  He owned much property
In vs. 24 What does Jesus mean by a camel and a needle?  That it’s impossible to be saved by our own good deeds or what we possess.
In those days wealth was deemed proof of God’s approval and those who were wealthy could give more alms, it was commonly thought that rich people were the most likely candidates for heaven.
What do the disciples ask in vs. 25?  Who can be saved?
In vs. 26 How does Jesus respond?  With God all things are possible…So who can save us?  God, in His Grace & Mercy
In vs. 28 Regeneration = “paliggenesia”is referring to the Messianic restoration or the new kingdom
At this time the disciple do what over the twelve tribes of Israel?  Judging them
In vs. 29 Those who will be in the new kingdom have done what?
                                Left….. houses… Brothers…. Sisters…. Mothers…. Fathers…. children …farms
                                For what?  My Name’s sake
In vs. 30 what does last first, and first last mean?  Everyone will be equal
